Talk by Michael U. Hensel

Architect Partner in OCEAN, and Professor at Vienna University of Technology, Department for Digital Architecture and Planning.

In the early 1990s design computing evolved alongside new approaches to experimental design and design research. The talk will focus on a personal journey through three decades of computational design in architecture and the different conceptual and methodological approaches that unfolded from this trajectory of work. This includes work undertaken in the practice OCEAN, as well as in different research environments and educational contexts.

We are joined by Dr Stefania Soldini from the University of Liverpool & Liam Birtles from Squidsoup, in a session moderated by Dr. Anna Chatzimichali.

In this session, we will discuss with our researchers: What are the commonalities between art and engineering? How can distributed systems take us to space, and give us joy? How can collective intelligence inform multidisciplinary research?

This session our Anna Nikolaidou will moderate with talks from our guests Grace Chung & Preety Anand + Andrew Adamatzky. They discuss: In the century of biology, can we mimic biology at a microscopic level? Further, can design substitute conventional fabrication materials with biomaterial? How can design embed the inherent intelligence these organisms have?

Presented by the MSc in Computational Architecture, Department of the Architecture and Built Environment at UWE Bristol. Moderated by Anas Lila, Lecturer in Architecture - UWE Bristol.

Speakers will include Daniel Piker who is the developer of the Kangaroo plug-in for Rhinoceros® and Grasshopper® and focuses on the simulation of aspects of the behaviour of real-world materials and objects in order to modify designs in response to engineering analyses. We will also be joined by Dr Yahya Lavaf-Pour, a Senior lecturer who, in pursuit of integral theory, researches architectural form as the capacity to entangle spiritual and pragmatic aspects of design.

For our first soft opening session, we briefly introduce our new MSc in Computational architecture and also proudly present our MArch Graduate Megan Peeks who presents her recent published research that began as a Design Research Project during her studies. Moderated by Dr Lidia Badarnah, our MArch graduates will also discuss their experience learning Computational methods, applying them to find design solutions, and their prospects after graduation.
